In the Aydin-Milas region of southwest Turkey, gravity anomalies can be readily correlated with the surface geology, in particular, graben and faults. Gravity anomalies of the Buyuk Menderes Graben have been modeled with the control of densities obtained from core samples of drilled boreholes. Aeromagnetic anomalies show much less correlation with the surface geology, suggesting relatively deep sources. There are two prominent aeromagnetic anomalies in the north and south of the region near the towns of Aydin and Milas. Three-dimensional modeling of these anomalies suggests that the source of the Milas anomaly is a ridge extending WSW-ESE with superimposed prominences; intensities of magnetization suggest that the magnetic sources may be granitoid intrusions derived from partial melting of the upper crust. The magnetic ridge runs parallel to the Hellenic trench to the SW and it is proposed that this represents the onshore continuation of the magmatic arc associated with the subduction of the African plate beneath Anatolia. The Buyuk Menderes Graben may have originated in the trench suction force associated with this subduction.
