Abstract

Neonatology is a relatively new subspecialty practice in Turkey. Although, the first obstetrics clinics was constructed more than a century ago and some special care clinics for the newborns have emerged around the years 1960's and 1970's, it was not until about a decade ago that Neonatology was accepted as a separate subspecialty field. The interest and nearly all activity around newborn health were centered upon the third level of care for many years. Comprehension of the priorities of newborn health in developing countries lead to great steps taken towards dissemination of skills and knowledge to all around the country and to a consequent significant decrease in newborn and infant mortality.
