Abstract

The integrity and functional activity of the sperm membrane is of major importance in the fertilization process and assessment of membrane function may be a useful indicator of the fertilizing ability of spermatozoa (Keel and Webster, 1990). To evaluate the characteristics of the spermatozoal membrane, Hypoosmotic Swelling-Eosine Test (HE-test) is the most suitable for the analysis of both the functional (fertilizing capabilities) and the structural integrity (viability) of the membrane in the same cells at the same time (Ramirez et al., 1992) and it is a more accurate semen analysis method in predicting the fertilizing capacity of a semen sample (Neild et al., 1998).
