Euphemistic vocabulary about “bear” in Sakha Turkish Saha Türkçesinde ayi ile ilgili örtmece söz varliği

© 2017 Hacettepe University 1. All rights reserved.Sakha Turkish has a great variety in terms of the vocabulary regarding “bear”. Most of them are euphemistic names which were derived due to the beliefs about the bear. In this study, almost 100 words referring to the word “bear” in Sakha Turkish were detected. We have classified the vocabulary in terms of direct names referring to “bear”, the types of “bear” and age and gender of “bear”. In addition to these, the word “bear” has euphemistic names. Following classification is made in consideration of 66 words or phrases which are found euphemistically used: 1)words expressing kinship relations and the old age of the human; 2) titles and address forms reflecting respect; 3) words expressing the power and size of the bear; 4) words expressing behavioral features of the bear; 5) words expressing physical features of the bear (size of its body, characteristics of its fur, teeth); 6) words regarding the environment and life style of the bear; 7) pronouns; 8) borrowed words meaning “bear”; 9) other names (we do not have clear information about meanings and origins of these, however they were probably created with the methods of borrowing or phonemic replacement). We can find examples of derivation, borrowing, metaphor, metonymy and periphrasis, pronominalization, phonemic replacement in production of these euphemistic names.
