Özet

Aim: The present study aimed to determine the mediating role of nurses’ skills of managing the emotions of others in the relationship between their social capital and need for affect. Methods: We collected data from 248 nurses over a span of three months – January, February, and March 2022 – through the snowball method, using a descriptive information form, the Need for Affect Scale, the Managing the Emotions of Others Scale, and the Social Capital Scale. Afterwards, descriptive analyses, structural equation model and the bootstrap test were used to assess the data. Findings: It was found that nurses did in fact play a mediating role when managing the emotions of others. The enhance subscale positively predicted the tendency to approach emotions. Social capital negatively predicted the conceal subscale, while it positively predicted the enhance subscale and tendency to approach emotions. The enhance subscale positively predicted the tendency to approach emotions and tendency to avoid emotions. On the other hand, the conceal subscale positively predicted the tendency to avoid emotions and negatively predicted the tendency to approach emotions. The poor skills subscale positively predicted the tendency to avoid emotions. Conclusion: We determined that nurses’ skills of managing the emotions of others were effective in the relationship between their social capital and need for affect. How nurses dealt with emotions was positively affected by social capital. Emotion empowerment activities should be prepared in such a way to create a positive effect on the motivation of nurses to approach patients’ emotions.
