Abstract

The phylogenetic relationship of four Cistanche plants (C. deserticola, C. salsa, C. tubulosa and C. sinensis) was examined by comparing the nucleotide sequences of the plastid rps2 gene and the intergenic spacer region between rpl16 and rpl14. Intraspecific variations of the nucleotide sequence were found in all Cistanche species whereas some C. deserticola samples and C. salsa samples showed the identical nucleotide sequence. The NJ tree reconstructed based on the sequence data revealed that C. deserticola and C. salsa from China were closely related to each other. C. salsa from Turkey was distinct from them. C. tubulosa and C. sinensis could be clearly distinguished from each other and from C. deserticola and C. salsa.
