Potato Russia International Conference 2007, Moscow, Rusya, 01 Ağustos 2007, ss.70-89, (Tam Metin Bildiri)
We make a comparative economic analysis of potato farming in the main production areas of Turkey, and examine the rote of producers in the marketing phase. The research analyses the data complied 291 farms chosen from the provinces of Nigde, Nevsehir, Ordu, Erzurum, Afyon and Bolu, covering 41.4% of the country's potato cultivation areas and 48.6% of the total production, as well as the firms and merchandisers purchasing products from these farms. Potato producing farms are generally small in size, the level of organization is Low and the population and tabour force are considerably high. The farms allocate between 15%-63% of their operating Lands for potato framing in provinces, where potato farming can be said to be traditionalized and has become the major cash crop. The gross and net profits in potato farming per unit area are considerably high when compared to other crops cultivated on the same farms, which encourages the cultivation of potatoes as a monoculture farming on farms. In areas where land has been quarantined due to potato wart, the sum of the net profit provided by the main alternative crops being cultivated instead of the potato and the state support being provided falls far short of the potato's net economic benefit. It was found that the producers are unsatisfied with the imposed quarantine for economic and social reasons. Between 79%-96% of annual production on farms is offered to the market. The producers' rate of participation in the process of marketing in accordance with provinces ranges between 19% and 36%. It appears that the Level of producer participation in the process of marketing is insufficient. In order to increase the small producers' welfare, it is imperative that they participate in the process of product marketing and benefit from vertical integration.
