The kinetics have been investigated of 2-isopropylnaphthalenehydroperoxide (2-IPNHP) production from isopropylnaphthalene (IPN) in a gas liquid-solid/catalytic reaction system. It has been found that the oxidation of IPN occurs by a chain reaction mechanism. The first radical in the oxidation which propagates the chain was generated by means of copper as the initiator-catalyst. The effects of temperature, residence time, oxygen feed and agitation rates were studied. The main by-products of the oxidation system are dimethyl-2-naphthylcarbinol (DMNC), 2-acetonaphthone (AN), 2-isopropenyl-naphthalene (IPPN) and diisopropylnaphthylperoxide (DNP). A kinetic model for the reaction system is proposed, and the model parameters have been calculated.
