Özet

Problem-solving abilities are closely linked to coping, emotional regulation, and social functioning in individuals with psychiatric disorders. This study examined changes in problem-solving abilities, including both problem solving skills and approaches among forensic psychiatric inpatients participating in an eight-session group-based social work intervention. Using a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, data were collected from thirteen patients in a high-security forensic psychiatric hospital in Turkey. Quantitative measures included pre- and post-tests using the short and long forms of the Social Problem-Solving Inventory, while qualitative data were gathered through group sessions and follow-up interviews. Quantitative findings demonstrated statistically significant improvements in both problem-solving skills and approaches, with meaningful effect sizes. Qualitative findings supported these results, indicating increased self-awareness, more broader coping strategies, and more deliberate problem engagement. Overall, the findings suggest that group-based social work interventions can enhance problem-solving abilities in this population and contribute to the emerging evidence base.
