Objective: Purpose of this study to determine general characteristics of the completed suicide attempts in Adiyaman in the years of 2003-2004 and within the first five months of 2005. Methods: This is a research with screening model that is based upon retrospective studying of the records. The data was gathered from suicide attempt records of Adiyaman Provincial Security Directorate. Findings: Fifty-nine of the totally 210 (%28.10) suicide attempts during the specified period were committed by males, while the remaining 151 (%71.90) were committed by women and the suicide attempts were concentrated in 15-24 age group. Rates of bachelors are higher in both of males (%77.97) and females (%58.28). However, rate of married (%41.72) females is higher than the rate of (%22.03) males (p<0.05). In spite that there is no significant difference in monthly distribution, there is more suicide attempts (%12.35) in the month of February and less suicide attempts (%4.94) in the month of April (p>0.05). Usage of drugs and toxic substances is the most applied suicide attempt method for both of the sex groups (%83.05 in males, %96.69 in females). On the other hand, the males have applied cutting instruments and other methods more than the females (p<0.05). Sequentially, physiological depression, economical reasons and family problems for males and family problems, physiological depression and health problems for females were found to be significant as suicide attempt reasons(p<0.05). Conclusion: The women prominently appeared on the foreground in the suicide attempts in Adiyaman. This situation is indicating that the women, who are in a vulnerable social position all over the province, are effected more from the variations occurred on sociocultural environment of the province when compared to males.
