Aquaculture is one of the critical sectors in the supply of edible protein for sustainable agricultural production. Aquaculture has grown dramatically over the past 20 years, becoming the fastest-growing food industry in the world. As aquaculture production intensifies, factors related to the environment, host, pathogen and pollution increase the disease risk. The aquaculture industry has relied on chemotherapeutics and antibiotics for many years to prevent and treat diseases. In practice, there is no vaccine available against all agents. Due to the continuation of antimicrobial drugs and disinfectant chemical applications, resistant pathogens are developing, and chemical residues in the aquatic environment threaten all aquatic life. For this reason, research focuses on environmentally friendly food safety approaches, which are very effective in increasing yield per unit area and preventing diseases. At this point, functional feed additive applications in aquaculture feed for sustainable aquaculture are considered a vital approach that can minimize the use of drugs and chemical applications in the aquatic environment. Functional feed additives in aquatic animal feeds include phytogenic compounds, marine products, bioactive immunostimulants, prebiotics, probiotics, synbiotics, enzymes, mycotoxin binders and organic acids. Recent advances in functional feed additives have produced positive results in controlling aquatic microbial pathogens. This evaluation study discusses the effectiveness of functional feed additives and new culture techniques, which are promising in terms of disease management and food safety in aquaculture.
