Özet

Prostate cancer is an important public health problem among men throughout the world. It has been established that there is an association between the consumption of tomato and a lower risk of prostate cancer. It has also been demonstrated that garlic has a direct toxic effect on prostate cancer cells in tissue culture. In a study to investigate possible effects of tomato juice oil adenosine deaminase (ADA) activity in human prostate tissue from patients with prostate cancer in vitro, the tomato juice caused significant inhibition on ADA activity in the prostate tissues. In another study to investigate possible effects of garlic extract ingestion on disease parameters of patients with prostate cancer, the total and free prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels in the blood samples of the patients were measured to be significantly lowered after the extract consumption. The parameters of urinary frequency, maximum and average rates of urinary flow were also established to be significantly improved in the patients. The results of this study suggest that garlic extract supplementation leads to significant improvement in disease parameters of the patients with prostate cancer. It is inferred that protective effect proposed for tomato products against prostate cancer may result from its inhibition potential on ADA activity.
