Coumarins are an important group of secondary metabolites in the plant kingdom. Their diverse structure makes them excellent agents in the prevention or treatment of various diseases and disorders. While this chapter emphasizes herbal coumarins, coumarins derivatives isolated from bacteria and/or marine organisms are also important along with synthetic coumarins that have been produced by medicinal chemists in order to enhance the effects, reduce side effects, or solve problems like solubility associated with natural coumarins which are also important in respect to human health.
