Özet

Individual- community matter, which is one of the major discussion topics of sociology, have not only come up frequently in the world, but also in Turkey. It is observed that, especially the thinkers of Turkey in 1930' s, when there was a certain level of intellectual vitality, often mentioned individual- community debate in their works. The question of whether the individual or the community should be relied more was discussed widely among the thinkers of the period, both in terms of the ontological source of the sociological research and the argued social, philosophical, ideological values. In this research, by focusing on this research question, it is attempted to identify the commonalities and the differences among the approaches of the notable thinkers in 1930' s. For this purpose, firstly the theoretical dimension of the discussion is explained by analyzing the views of some sociologists from Europe and Constitutional Monarchy era on the subject, since they influenced the thinkers of Turkey in 1930' s. After forming this basis, based upon the various books and articles written in that period, the thinkers are classified according to their approaches to the individual- community discussion. According to this classification, three main categories have been identified as being communitarian, reconciliator and prone to individualism. Although three separate categorizations were made, it is understood that the thinkers actually had a more reconciliatory approach to the debate rather than being extreme, and this reconciliation was community- oriented rather than individual- oriented. It is thought that this communitarian tendency was consistent with the general atmosphere of the period and also was in harmony with the target of the Republican administration to create a citizen that has a selfhood.
