This preliminary study was planned to determine the role of Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and Modified Barthel Index (MBI), of which validity and reliability were shown in various countries, in evaluation of Turkish population. Forty spinal cord injury, forty-one stroke patients were evaluated at admission and discharge, regarding neurological impairment and functional disability. The motor impairments of stroke patients were evaluated by Brunnstrom's Stroke Recovery Assessment, and American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) 1992 Standards were used for motor and sensorial impairment analysis of spinal cord injury patients. Functional disability of the groups was assessed by both FIM and MBI. After the rehabilitation program, neurological impairment and functional independence levels of the groups were improved. Significant correlation between impairment and disability measures and between the similar items of FIM and MBI supported the construct validity of the scales. The internal consistency of FIM and MBI were found to be high. After the rehabilitation program FIM and MBI displayed the expected improvements for patients' pathologies sufficiently, showing the discriminative power of the scales. As a conclusion, the documents of this preliminary study showed the validity and reliability of FIM and MBI in planning, evaluating and measuring the outcome of rehabilitation programs of Turkish patients.
