In our study, we examined 10 discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) patients in order to evaluate the effect of antimalarial treatment on the immunodeposition at the basal membrane zone. Biopsy materials taken from the lesional skin, sun exposed normal skin and protected normal skin, before and after chloroquine diphosphate therapy were examined by immunohistochemistry. In all of our 10 DLE patients, the deposition of IgG and IgM were detected and in five patients there was also C 3 deposition on the basal membrane zone. After the therapy, there was no staining at the dermoepidermal junction in 4 patients, but a demonstrative decrease in the intensity of staining was observed in 6 patients. In conclusion, in DLE patients, chloroquine diphosphate treatment either decreases the immunoglobulin deposition or causes a total disappearance of this deposition at the dermoepidermal junction. It can be concluded that besides the anti-inflammatory and lysosomal membrane stabilization effects, chloroquine therapy might interfere with the synthesis and deposition of immunoglobulins in DLE patients.
