The factors that affect the teaching program students' attitudes towards HIV/AIDS

Özet

Background: AIDS is one of the basic health problems of humanity which is seen in all countries of the world. It is very important to inform people about this disease and how to protect oneself from it. To give education to the students in order to protect from AIDS during the school years is a good solution. At this point, teachers have a consequential role in HIV/AIDS education in the societies. The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that influence the attitudes of teaching program students towards HIV/AIDS. Material/Methods: The study was conducted on 214 junior students who attend the teaching programs of Ankara University. A survey was developed and applied to the study group in order to get information about their personal characteristics. Besides, an attitude scale towards HIV/AIDS (developed by Kutlu& Gūlleroǧlu) was applied in order to get information about their general attitudes towards HIV/ AIDS and the people who have HIV/AIDS. Stepwise procedure of Multiple Regression Analysis was applied to the data to see the effects on the HIV/AIDS-related attitudes of the students. Results: According to the results of Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis, the best predictor of the attitude towards HIV/AIDS are the students' test scores. The second predictor is high school type and the third predictor is gender. Conclusion: The findings of this study emphasized the importance of accurate and specific HIV/AIDS-related education for Turkish Teaching Prognarn University Students. Since the knowledge about AIDS affects the attitude towards AIDS, by an accurate information, students can change their behaviors and attitudes towards the disease.
