CLINICAL-VALUE OF SIALIC-ACID LEVELS AND CERULOPLASMIN ACTIVITY IN SERUM AND CEREBROSPINAL-FLUID (CSF) - CSF SIALIC-ACID TOTAL PROTEIN RATIO AS A TUMOR-MARKER IN BRAIN-TUMORS

Özet
Serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sialic acid concentrations CSF sialic acid/total protein (SA/TP) ratios and ceruloplasmin activities (CPA) were analysed in 43 patients with intracranial tumors. In grade III-IV tumors (n = 19) serum sialic acid levels (SAL) were significantly higher than the values both in benign tumor (n = 12) and control groups (n = 43) (p < 0.01). Serum SAL and CSF SAL in grade I-II and III-IV tumors were not significantly different. Serum CPA among control and various tumor groups were not significantly different. CPA, which we were unable to detect in CSF of controls (n = 11); appeared in CSF of 11 patients with benign or graded tumors, but neither serum nor CSF CPA seemed valuable in grading the tumors. CSF sialic acid/total protein (SA/TP) ratios increased in grade I-II and III-IV tumors and, furthermore, SA/TP ratios were significantly higher in grade III-IV than those in grade I-II tumors (p < 0.01). In conclusion, CSF SA/TP ratio seems to be a reliable marker which indicates the grade of brain tumors.
