Influence of experimental conditions on product distribution during pyrolysis of tuncbilek lignite (Turkey) at low heating rates

Abstract

Tuncbilek lignite was pyrolyzed under nitrogen stream of 3.5 L/min, at 0.5, 5, and 10 MPa and 220°-950°C. The effect of temperature and nitrogen pressure on the formation rates of evolved products during pyrolysis (tar, total gas, and gaseous species [H2, CH4, C2H4, C2H6, CO, CO2, and H2O]) and the yields of tar and gaseous products were determined. Thermal degradation, radical formation, and decomposition processes played an important role on pyrolysis of Tuncbilek lignite. The formation of H2 and other gases started at ∼ 400°C and reached a maximum ∼ 530°C for CH4. Tar formation rate decreased with increasing pressure. An increase in temperature led to the enhancement of diffusion rate and, due to the consumption of the low molecular products, less tar formed at the high temperatures.
