In the construction industry, one of the major challenges faced by various stakeholders within the context of building construction is the decision on the right choice of materials from the list of available alternatives for the various building components. However, due to the wide variety of materials that can be used for the same purposes, it is necessary to give adequate considerations to objectives such as safety, durability, aesthetics, economy and sustainability. This study is aimed at establishing a general multi-criteria scoring framework for material selection in building designs. For this purpose, the basic criteria that will affect the selection of building materials were defined and an Analytic Hierarchy Process was conducted with 34 expert participants to determine the weights of these criteria in material selection. The most suitable roofing material was determined by applying this scoring framework on the five alternative materials approved by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change for use as roof covering materials. This model can be used for selection of building materials for all other building components. It is expected that the model obtained from this research will be value to the various sector stakeholders during building material selection for all building components.
