Özet

Aim: To obtain the first datas of the mechanically ventilated patients in our newly opened pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for determining the future strategies to improve our PICU's medical quality. Material and Method: A retrospective study was undertaken in 186 patients admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of Ankara Diskapi Pediatric Disease Education and Investigation Hospital between December 2006-February 2008. Results: Mechanically ventilated patients constituted 40.9% of all patients. Indication of mechanical ventilation could be divided into four groups as respiratory failure (47.4%), cardiovascular failure (14.5%), central nervous system disease (21%), and guarding the airway (17.1%). The complication ratio of mechanically ventilated children was 33.8%. The mortality rate of mechanically ventilated patients was 55.3%, whereas the overall mortality rate in the PICU was 22.6%. Conclusions: As the number of fully equipped PICUs increase, data about MV in children will also increase which in turn will benefit those who need MV in our country.
