Using graphite, Cu, Sn and Pb electrodes the comparative investigation on the electro-reduction of nitro substituted benzimidazoles in 1 M H2SO4 containing 10% methanol have been made. Cyclic voltammetry, chronocoulometry, chronoamperometry and constant-potential coulometry techniques were employed to study the mechanism. The cyclic voltammetric data were evaluated according to Nicholson- Shain criteria and it was observed that the reduction on graphite and Cu was irreversible and followed an ECE mechanism. No reduction peak was observed with tin and lead electrodes. The diffusion coefficients, the amount of adsorbed substances (surface excess values) and the number of electrons transferred were calculated from the CA, CC anti BE data. A mechanism for the electro-reduction reaction was also proposed.
