Özet

Radiotherapy (RT) plays an important role in the treatment of cervical cancer. Especially, it is accepted as the primary treatment modality in locally advanced disease, whereas, in early stage disease. RT may be given after surgery as an adjuvant treatment. However meta-analyses and phase III trials changed the standart treatment as cisplatin-based chemoradiation. After the National Cancer Institute (NCI) announcement in 1999, cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy was accepted as the key treatment. In order to increase the local effects of RT; brachytherapy (BRT) is used together with external RT (ERT) or alone. The American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) suggested some principal rules in order to make the treatment easy and to make the planning dose distribution standart. Because of the advantages of high dose rapid (HDR) BRT in homogenous planning dose distribution, and easyness of the application, HDR BRT became more popular. Also ABS suggested some HDR dose fractionations. Since cervical cancer was accepted as locally recurrent tumors, multidisciplinary treatment modalities should be used. Patients performance status, and complications during and after the treatment should be taken into account.
