We may say that films have such qualities as frequently keeping alive a common sentiment and being effective in the determination of human conduct in the face of events. Taking this as a departure point, we may seek answers to questions as "What sorts of message(s) have been given to the society in terms of perception of disease by means of films ? What the film directors regard as disease and which diseases they most frequently give a place in their films ? and "What the society expects from disease and therapy? To this end, abstracts of relevant scenarios of all the films made in Turkey until 1996 have been read and evaluated. In this study, the diseases in the films have been considered with reference to whether they agree with popular diseases prevailing at those times and whether they reflect the related social value judgments as regards them. The study also comprises, as a framework and to a certain extent, the interpretation of how the society looks at the patient and the disease.
