Özet

The purpose of this work is to study, through biomechanical and other related means, the effect of dietary calcium deficiency in rats. It is known that the lack of Ca in the dietary habits of animals causes resorption which eventually results in osteoporosis. The experiments were performed on control and experimental groups, each one of which consisted of sixteen 3 to 4 week-old Wistar rats. The rats in both groups were fed with a semisynthetic diet. The only differing ingredients between the two groups were Ca gluconate and glucose. In the control group the Ca was 0.5% and in the experimental it was 0.03%. On the other hand, the glucose intake of the experimental animals was three times more than that of the control. The femoras of the rats were used in the biomechanical experiments. A microprocessor controlled digital electronic universal testing machine was used for this purpose. In addition to the biomechanical studies, nuclear medicine, densitometric and histological studies and body weight gain evaluations were also undertaken.
