Evaluation of organic causes of recurrent abdominal pain such as parasitic enfestations, celiac disease, uriner tract infection, Helicobacter pylori infection and determine functional gastrointestinal disorders in children were aimed in the study. Material and Methods: Children with recurrent abdominal pain more than three times in frequency, for at least three months duration, without a known medical history and drug usage were recruited to study. Medical records were evaluated for pain characteristics, laboratory, radiological and histopathological findings, retrospectively. Results: A hundred and fifty-one children [(57.6% female, mean age 10.7±3.4 (4-17) years] with recurrent abdominal pain for median 12 (3-20) months, were recruited to study. According to Rome III criteria; 81 (53.6%) patients had functional gastrointestinal disorders, 70 (46.4%) patients had an organic etiology. There was no difference between functional and organic recurrent abdominal pain in respect to age, gender, duration and characteristics of abdominal pain. The most common functional gastrointestinal disorder was functional abdominal pain (62.9%). H. pylori infection (46%), parasitic infections (10.5%), biopsy-proven celiac disease (3.9%) were the most common organic etiologies. Conclusion: No difference was found between organic and functional recurrent abdominal pain, in terms of age, gender, accompanying symptoms, abdominal pain characteristics, and physical examination findings. Celiac disease should be screened in all children with recurrent abdominal pain.
