Özet

Today, with the increasing world population, the demand for food is also increasing. The increase in population, the decrease in agricultural areas with the expansion of urban areas and the negative effects of climate change create a great pressure on the agricultural sector. In order to meet the increasing demand, efforts are being made to increase the yield in both plant and animal production. Especially animal products have an extremely important position in human nutrition. The 8 amino acids, which are important for a healthy and balanced diet of humans, are only available in protein sources of animal origin. Today, animal husbandry has become an industry in the world. This industry has an important place in the economies of countries. For this reason, animal husbandry is a strategic sector for countries. Sheep farming has an important place in animal breeding. The main reasons for this are the high adaptability of sheep, the ability to utilise even pastures that are difficult to be utilised by other animals, the fact that breeding is based on pasture, the low feed costs and the growth rate of the herd. Today, there is an increase in the number of sheep all over the world. Sheep breeding has become an important source of income for people living in rural areas, with meat, milk, leather and fleece production, especially in Eastern and Southeastern Anatolia regions of our country. Although there has been a decrease in the number of sheep in our country since 1980, the number of sheep has increased by approximately 52% since 2010 with increasing government support. As of 2022, there are 56 265 750 heads of ovine animals in our country. 44,687,888 heads of this animal asset are sheep. Again, as of 2022, 1 067 342 of 21 563 492 tonnes of milk produced in our country is sheep's milk. Looking at meat production, 21 563 828 sheep were slaughtered in 2022 and 489 354 tonnes of red meat were produced. Şanlıurfa province, where the study was carried out, has an important share in sheep breeding in our country with 2 093 967 sheep.

In this study, considering the negative effects of climate change on livestock breeding, sheep breeding in Şanlıurfa, which has an important share in sheep breeding in our country, was discussed in order to increase the welfare level of people living in rural areas and its effects on rural development studies.
