Morphological characterisation is essential for the evaluation of garlic diversity. The aim of this study
was to determine the morphological variation among the local and foreign garlic genotypes cultivated
in the region of Ankara. The morphological characteristics were determined based on UPOV
descriptors. The tratis studied include foliage density, foliage attitude, leaf green color, leaf waxiness,
leaf: lenght (longest leaf), leaf width, leaf shape in cross section, pseudostem: intensity of anthocyanin
coloration at base, pseudostem: width of the base, bulb: ground color of dry external scales, and clove
color of scale were evaluated. For this purpose, the selection criteria were chosen, and the evaluation
was conducted using the weighted ranking method. Furthermore, the study evaluated biometric data
for morphological traits such as plant height, leaf width, bulb height, bulb weight, bulb diameter, clove
height and number of cloves per bulb. The results of weighted ranking method indicate that genotype
GN6 (Tokat), GN5 (Taşköprü district of Kastamonu) and GN7 (Pazarcık district of Kahramanmaraş)
received high evaluation scores, respectively. The study also found that bulb weight and plant height
are significant factors in the variability of genotypes in terms of biometric traits. This study can help
breeders to identify landrace ecotypes with desirable traits for inclusion in variety breeding
programmes
