Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) were introduced in 1991 and have gained increasing attention as an alternative drug carrier system to traditional colloidal carriers. In this review article, advantages - disadvantages and production procedures of SLNs are summarized. Also, methods of characterization of these colloidal carrier systems and the problems related to the production have been reviewed and the drug incorporation models taking place in the release of drug from SLNs have been described. And finally, in addition to the application methods of SLNs, examples of the studies on the pharmaceutic and cosmetic applications have been reviewed.
