From fixed positions to role diversity: positional evolution in the National Basketball Association

This study investigates the longitudinal evolution of playing positions in the National Basketball Association (NBA) over the past two decades, with particular emphasis on changes in role diversity and the restructuring of within-position performance profiles. A comparative multivariate design was applied using regular season data from 2005–2006 (n = 423) and 2024–2025 (n = 275). Eleven performance indicators, standardised per 100 possessions, were categorised into four domains: offensive volume, shooting efficiency, playmaking/decision-making, and defensive contribution. Two-way PERMANOVA revealed statistically significant main effects of season (F = 57.612, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.057) and position (F = 64.923, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.255), as well as a significant season × position interaction (F = 3.362, p < 0.001, R2 = 0.013). PCA identified two dominant dimensions explaining 61.5% of the total variance: Interior Offence (PC1, 32.9%) and Playmaking (PC2, 28.6%). Power forwards and centres exhibited significant increases in facilitation and ball-handling responsibilities. PERMDISP results indicated significant intra-positional dispersion in 2024–2025 compared with 2005–2006 (p = 0.019), suggesting increased variability within positions. These findings highlight the need to incorporate multifaceted skill profiles into player evaluation and development frameworks in modern basketball.
