Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis LL140 was studied for the genetic location of lactose and protein utilization and resistance to phage circle divide ll20. During the experiments with the derivatives carrying only single plasmid molecules, 41.0 and 28.2 kb plasmids were found to encode lactose and protein utilization, respectively The 41.0 kb lactose plasmid was also encodes adsorption inhibition type resistance against the phage empty set II20 and high-frequency conjugal transfer ability in matings between nonclumping donor and recipients.
