Özet

Purpose: To investigate the contribution of rapid-onsite cytological examination to the diagnostic accuracy of fine needle aspiration biopsy in parotid gland lesions. Materials and Methods: The rapid-onsite cytology and postoperative pathology results of our patients, who underwent fine needle aspiration biopsy for parotid gland lesion in our non-vascular interventional radiology unit between January 2012 and September 2022 were evaluated retrospectively. Fine needle aspiration biopsy results of 589 patients (274 females and 315 males) were recorded as cytologically diagnostic, suspicious, uncertain and non-diagnostic. In addition, pathology results obtained after surgery for parotid gland lesions were evaluated in comparison with rapid-onsite cytopathological results. Results: The median age of our patients was 60 (between 18-97 years). 49.4% of the lesions are located in the right parotid, 47.2% in the left parotid, and 3.4% are bilateral. While 85.6% (504 cases) of the lesions are benign, 14.4% (85 cases) are malignant. Whartin tumor and pleomorphic adenoma constitute the majority of benign lesions (33.6%, 26.1%, respectively). While 91.9% of FNABs had diagnostic value, non-diagnostic results were obtained in only 0.3% of cases. In patients who underwent surgical resection; a very high agreement of 97.9% was found between the rapid-onsite cytology results obtained with FNAB and the histopathological results after surgery. Conclusion: FNAB obtained by rapid cytological evaluation per case for parotid lesions is in excellent agreement with the pathological results obtained after surgery. Rapid onsite cytological evaluation prevents unnecessary re-biopsy procedures. Keywords: Fine needle aspiration biopsy, parotis gland, rapid-onsite cytologic evaluation.
