Abstract

G. Sallustius Crispus, who lived in BC 1st century, is an important writer of history considering his academic historiographership and that his works have philosophical depth. The aim of this study is to tackle Sallustius' work titled Bellum lugurthinum and investigate his contribution to written history. In our study firstly we tried to identify Author's public functions. Following we tried to take on the environment where Sallustius was raised, and the political, moral, economic and cultural aspects of his lifetime period. The subject of the work is the war during the period BC 111 and 105 between the Roman and lugurtha, the king of Numidia that is located in north of Africa. In this monographic type work we investigated how this contentious environment affected Author's works. Sallustius, in his work Bellum lugurthinum narrated the moral crash in Rome, and how Rome lost its old values. Particularly he brought out that the rulers in Rome could manage everything for money and power. The work reflects the events with a deep seriousness in terms of moral, and the Author didn't reveal this with an artificial attitude. C. Sallustius Crispus facilitated in Bellum lugurthinum the understanding of the inside stories of political and moral developments in Rome.
