Behaviors exhibited throughout life from early childhood and the biological and psychological
reasons underlying these behaviors continue to be the subject of research today. Since cognitive
flexibility is the ability to adapt to new situations, it is possible to define it as an important skill
that shapes human behavior.
One of the other reasons that shape human behavior is problem solving skills. Although
problem situations are undesirable to experience in daily life, it should be accepted that they
are a part of life. Therefore, we can say that problem solving skill is one of the important skills
that affect behavior, just like cognitive flexibility.
The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the cognitive flexibility levels of
mothers and the problem-solving behaviors of their children aged 60-72 months. In line with
this main purpose, the causal comparative method, one of the quantitative research methods,
was used in the study. The study group of the research of 62 children and their mothers in the
60-72 month group who received pre-school education for at least 6 months in the city center
of Bolu in 2022-2023. As a data collection tool in the study, the "Cognitive Flexibility Scale"
was applied to the mothers and the "Problem Solving Scale" was applied to the children. In
addition, demographic information collected through the Personal Information Form and the
scores obtained from the measurement tools were analyzed with the SPSS program. As a result
of the analysis, it was determined that there was a positive and significant relationship between
mothers' cognitive flexibility levels, their children's problem-solving skills, the duration of preschool education, the education level of the parents, and the mothers' working outside the home.
In addition, it was concluded that there was no significant relationship between children's
gender, number of siblings, birth order, father's employment status, and whether there was a
family member living at home other than their parents, and their mothers' cognitive flexibility
and their children's problem-solving behaviors
