Özet

Extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) production was screened among 36 Klebsiella pneumoniae strains isolated from 6 blood, 11 urine, 5 tracheal aspirate, 4 catheter and 10 sputum isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae of intensive care patients by double disk synergy test and by means of ceftazidime/ceftazidime+clavulanate (CAZ/CAZ + clav.) minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) ratios. The detection of ESBL production was found similar in both of the methods as 44% and 42%, respectively. Ceftazidime and aztreonam disks were found more effective than cefotaxime disks to identify ESBL producers. When the results were evaluated by the NCCLS criterias published before 1997, these criterias were insufficient to identify ESBL producers. The same strains were found resistant to extended spectrum cephalosporins and aztreonam when evaluated by NCCLS disk diffusion criteria published in 1997.
