Problem: Tissue activities of dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) and adenosine deaminase (ADA) were measured in benign prostatic hypertrophy and prostate Cancer in order to gain insight into the nature of these disease processes. Methods: Tissue samples from 56 patients with benign hypertrophy and 24 patients with prostate cancer were analysed. Results: Mean DPPIV and ADA activities in the cancer group were significantly lower than those in benign prostatic hypertrophy group. There were significant positive intracorrelations between enzyme activities in both groups. Enzyme activities correlated inversely with the tumor stage. However, only ADA activity exhibited a negative correlation with Gleason grade in the cancer group. Conclusions: Lowered DPPIV and ADA activities support a correlation between enzyme activity and the carcinomatous process but not in benign prostatic hypertrophy.
