In this paper; two new spectrophotometric methods were used for the simultaneous determination of verapamil hydrochloride and pentobarbital in their binary mixture. In the first method, derivative spectrophotometry, dA/d lambda values were measured at 289.5 and 252.6 nm for verapamil hydrochloride and pentobarbital, respectively, in the first derivative spectra of their combination. The relative standard deviation of the method was 0.57% for verapamil hydrochloride and 0.71% for pentobarbital. In the other method the absorbency ratio method, the quantification of verapamil hydrochloride and pentobarbital was performed by using the absorbencies read at 280.8, 243.8 and 217.6 nm in the zero order spectra of their mixture. The relative standard deviation of the method was 1.64 and 1.29% for verapamil hydrochloride and pentobarbital, respectively. These two methods have been successfully applied to a sugar coated tablet containing only these drugs.
