Effects of graded contents of arginin supplementation on growth performance, haematological parameters and immune system in broilers

Özet

This study was carried out to evaluate growth performance and some biochemical, haematological and immunological parameters in broilers fed with diets containing various arginin (Arg) contents. A total of 300 one day old male broiler chickens were randomly allotted in 5 equal groups according to the Arg supplementation modalities: whereas controls were not supplemented and received basal starter diet (from day 1 to day 21 ) and grower diet (from day 22 to day 42), Arg was added at 25,50,75 and 100% of the NRC recommendations into the starter diets (40 birds per subgroup) or into the grower diet (20 birds per subgroup). All animals were vaccinated against the Newcastle Disease Virus on days 6 and 23. Initial and final body weights, body weight gains, food intake and food efficiency, were determined on day 42 as well as some biochemical markers (proteinemia, cholesterolemia, creatinine and NO concentrations) and circulating antibody titres. Carcass yield and the relative weights of various organs (liver, spleen, bursa of Fabricius, heart, gizzard and proventriculus) were measured on 8 birds from each subgroup. Haematological parameters were investigated in controls and only in birds supplemented within the growing period. While no alteration of the carcass traits was found between controls and treated birds, growth performances were significantly impaired in broilers supplemented with the 2 highest doses of Arg during the starting period whereas food intake and food efficiency were significantly altered in the corresponding subgroups supplemented during the growing period. In parallel, cholesterolemia tended to increase according to the Arg supply during the starting period and proteinemia to decrease during the growing period. Furthermore, when Arg supplementation was performed during the second period, erythrocyte characteristics were modified with an increase of the mean volume and a decrease of the mean corpuscular haemoglobin load, and with the 2 highest Arg doses, populations of heterophils and lymphocytes (T and B cells) depressed whereas the monocyte population was slightly expended and the NO production was significantly enhanced. Antibody titres were not altered whatever the Arg supplementation modalities. These results suggest that high Arg doses in diets interferes with growth and metabolism regulations according to the age of broilers and promote a non specific immunity with monocyte expansion and increased NO production.
