Liquid-phase oxidation of 2-isopropylnaphthalene (2-IPN) in the presence of NaOH, KOH, and LiOH were performed and effects of alkali metal hydroxides on the oxidation rate and product distribution were investigated. Oxidations were carried out at the initial emulsion pH values of 9.8, 11.3, and 12.4; and the maximum concentration and selectivity of the desired product 2-isopropylnaphthalenehydroperoxide (2-IPNHP) were obtained at pH=11.3. Catalytic performances of alkali metal hydroxides were explained through the formation of their oxides in the reaction medium depending on their atomic structures.
