Some of the main chemical properties of gyttja materials (humus gyttja, coal gyttja, calcareous gyttja) and lignite were investigated. Among the gyttja samples, the highest yield of humic acid (HA) was obtained by extraction of coal gyttja (40.78%), but increasing lime contents decreased the HA content of gyttja materials. Fulvic acid (FA) contents of the materials were lower than that of HAs, except in calcareous gyttja. If humic substances (HAs and FAs) would be used in extracted form as humic fertilizers, both coal gyttja and lignite may be preferred as low-cost natural materials.
