In this study, a new and simple method based on the effective length expression to calculate the resonant frequency of E-shaped compact microstrip antennas (ECMAs) is presented. For this purpose, the resonant frequencies of 144 ECMAs having different dimensions and electrical parameters are firstly determined by using the software IE3D (TM) based on method of moment (MoM), then the formulation for resonant frequency has been derived with the use of simulation data. The coefficients of the effective length expression used in the calculation of resonant frequency are determined with artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm which is an intelligent swarm optimization algorithm. The resonant frequencies calculated by the effective length expression are obtained with the average percentage error of 0.89 %. The validity and accuracy of the effective length expression is demonstrated on the ECMA fabricated in this work, whose size is less than 61 % as compared to that rectangular microstrip antenna (RMA).
