Sporting injuries of the thigh and hamstrings depend on the nature and energy of the
sport. Knowledge of the anatomy of the thigh and the mechanism of the injury
would aid in appropriate and accurate initial and subsequent management. The
objective of this chapter is for healthcare providers to correctly identify common
thigh injuries through on-field assessment, provide the necessary immediate acute
management, and identify those that need further management in the hospital. The
initial approach should follow the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
guidelines and it is crucial to rule out life-threatening conditions by stabilizing
the airway, breathing, and circulation first. In terms of the lower limb, the
neurovascular status must be addressed and well documented. Further management,
rehabilitation, and prevention are also crucial in allowing athletes to return to sports.
