Abstract
The structural and magnetic properties of SmMn2-xFexGe2 (0.0less than or equal toxless than or equal to1.0) were investigated by X-ray diffraction and DC magnetization measurements. All samples crystallize in the ThCr2Si2-type structure with the space group 14/mmm. Substitution of Fe for Mn led to a decrease in the lattice constants a and c and unit cell volume V. The results of earlier neutron diffraction and Mossbauer studies on SmMn2Ge2 are also used for interpreting the magnetization data and to give an account of the competing effects between various magnetic structures in the Mn and Sm sublattices. The results are summarized in SmMn2-xFexGe2 magnetic phase diagram. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
