Özet

This study examines four children’s plays found in the books by the Institution for the Protection of Children. This institution played an important role in the construction of citizens in the Single-Party period in Turkey (1923-1945). The four plays that I analyze are as follows: İki Devir, Ant, Emrindeyiz and Cumhuriyet Güneşi. Some observations about these children’s plays stand out. First, they are written in a clear language so that children can understand them easily. Second, the fact that they are decorated with poems, anthems and fantastic elements demonstrate that they were meant to be easily understandable and memorable in children’s minds. Third, the fact that many of the writers of the plays are teachers also show that they were viewed by the Turkish Republican elites as the transmitters of the official ideology to new generations. Children born in the post-Ottoman Turkey come to the fore as the primary target of the new regime. With its particular attention to its emphasis on the function of plays in turning children into Republican citizens, this study thus underlines the way in which official ideology attempted to construct a new generation of the new regime.
