A 2-year-old, mixed-breed dog was presented with trismus and associated cachexia. Clinical examination revealed severe atrophy of the head and masticatory muscles. Diseases that may cause trismus and locked jaw syndrome were considered in the differential diagnosis. The patient's 2 M autoantibody was measured. Significant increase in the titre of 1:4000 was observed, and the patient was diagnosed and treated for masticatory muscle myositis. Prednisolone (2 mg/kg) was initiated, and the dose was tapered and administered twice daily for 4 months. Despite complete recovery, the disease recurred 1 month after treatment was stopped. This time, cyclosporin (5 mg/kg) was used twice daily in addition to prednisolone (2 mg/kg) for 1 month, then the dose was tapered and used for 4 months twice daily. The patient has been living without relapse since the second course of treatment. Thus, for relapsed cases, cyclosporin can be used effectively in addition to prednisolone in salvage therapy.
