Pharmacoeconomy, describes the economic aspects of drug use. However, since it is used in many different areas it may described in several ways, depending on their specific aspects. From the Pharmacology perspective, it is a part of "rational drug use" principles. Even though "drug" or "pharmaco" seems to be the subject of the term "pharmacoecnomy", it is well known that the alternative to pharmacotherapy is not always another drug. Therefore in the recent years, especially after the establishment of NICE in England, it is also seen as a part of "Health Technology Assessment" (HTA) since it includes both, drugs and other technologies which are used in health care. Independent of the terminology used, the main principle is that it is used to analyze and compare the resources allocated and the outcomes obtained. In this presentation the pharmacoeconomic analysis types, the function of NICE and the outcomes of pharmacoeocnomic analyses will be discussed.
