The methodology for calculating the Local Sustainability Indicator (LSI) of a given community is presented in this paper. The LSI is a measure which shows quantitatively how sustainable or otherwise the activities of the community have been in achieving its quality of life, as measured by the Local Quality of Life Indicator (LQLI). A weighted aggregate of LSI and LQLI, called the Local Sustainable Development Indicator (LSDI), indicates the development (in terms of quality of life) of the community vis-a-vis the sustainability of the activities carried out to achieve that development. As a typical illustration, the calculations of LSI, LQLI and LSDI are given for the community in the Chankaya district of Ankara, Turkey, based on the questionnaire survey of a random and representative sample of the community.
