1st International Symposium on Cucurbits, Adana, Türkiye, 20 - 23 Mayıs 1997, ss.71-76
Changes in seed moisture, seed dry weight, germinability and vigour (seedling emergence and agEing) of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seeds during development were studied in 1994 and 1996. Mass maturity tend of the seed filling phase) was attained at 39 DAA (days after anthesis) in 1994, 35 DAA in 1996. Seed moisture content declined from 75-85 % at the first harvests to 40 % by the last one. The onset of germinability was attained at 21 DAA but resistance to enforced desiccation was developed by 28 DAA. Maximum germination percentages took place at 46 DAA in 1994 and 39 DAA in 1996. Maximum seed vigour determined by seedling emergence and dry weight in 1994 and rapid ageing test in 1996 coincided with mass maturity 39 DAA in 1994, but occurred 8 days after (43 DAA) in 1996. Results showed that cucumber seeds can be harvested between 39 and 43 DAA with high germinability and vigour.
