Özet

Purpose: The players in American Football usually wear protective gear for the head, face, shoulder, chest, knee etc. because they are prone to direct stroke, crash and falls. It was considered that this kind of protective sport wear has about 6kg weight and can affect speed and balance performance. However; we could not find any research on this subject. Material and methods: In this study 28 players participated who play in Bilkent University Team of American Football. Proprioception, which is the most important element of static and dynamic balance, was evaluated with stabiliometric test (KAT 2000) and speed performance with 30 m sprint and 11 m slalom run (Hacettepe University Football Analysis=HUFA). The tests were done while wearing and without wearing protective gear and the results were compared. Results: When subjects balanced on the right foot weight shifted to the right and posterior, and when they balanced on the left foot weight shifted to the left and posterior and this did not change with wearing sports gear. During evaluation of dynamic balance on both feet, weight shifted anteriorly and to the right, with sportswear anterior posterior shifting was equalized and there was a shift from right to left. All three balance tests showed that sportswear had a positive effect on maintaining balance. The difference was statistically significant for right static balance (p < 0.05). Wearing sports gear had a significant effect on HUFA slalom run test (p < 0.05) but did not affect the sprint running test (p > 0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion it was seen that American Football protective sports gear did not negatively affect the results obtained from stabiliometry and sprint run tests.
