Traditional classifications of immigration countries are inefficient in covering new destination countries that recently received high numbers of immigrants. It is necessary to overcome methodological limitations in order to integrate field research in newdestination countries with the literature and to conduct cross-national research. In this article, nation-state formation, citizenship regimes and migration policies, which are widely used when creating immigration country typologies, have been analyzed historically and theoretically. It has been concluded that, those interrelated variables can be used as methodological tools to determine the migration profile of a country and be traced through historical, legal and political levels.
